Surgeon won't size me until I've finished losing weight. Is waiting really necessary or is he being overcautious?

First post, been reading for months, finally have a question nobody else seems to have asked.

Had my consultation on Thursday. Everything was going well, he measured me, we talked about profiles, and then he asked about my weight and I said I've lost 11kg since January and want to lose another 6 or 7. And he basically stopped the sizing conversation there. Said he'd happily book a date but wouldn't pick an implant until I'm "where I'm going to stay" and had been there for a bit, and that if I wanted to go ahead now I'd need to accept the size might not be right in six months.

I get the logic in theory. But I have been waiting YEARS for this and I finally have the money and the time off arranged for September. Six or seven kilos isn't a huge amount, is it? My boobs haven't changed that much through the 11kg I've already lost (they've always been small, that's the whole point). Part of me thinks he's being overly careful and part of me thinks he knows something I don't.

Is this normal? Did anyone else get told to wait? And does a few kilos genuinely change what size you end up needing or is it just covering himself?

Normal, and I'd take it as a good sign about him rather than a bad one. The surgeons who'll size you at any weight on any day are the ones who don't have to live with the result.

The bit you're missing is that "my boobs haven't changed much" through 11kg is exactly the point: with small natural breasts the implant is going to be most of the result, so the question isn't really whether your breast tissue changes, it's the frame. Base width, how much skin there is to stretch, how much padding sits over the implant at the edges. All of that is measured on the day, and 6 or 7kg off a small frame moves those numbers more than you'd think.

Nobody died waiting three months. Lots of people have paid for a second operation because they didn't.

Lifter here so I go up and down 3 to 4kg with training cycles and my surgeon didn't blink at that, said it's within the noise. Told me the number she cares about is more like 10 percent of bodyweight either way. So there's probably a line somewhere between "a few kilos" and "still actively dieting" and your surgeon thinks you're on the wrong side of it for now. Annoying but not unreasonable.

Welcome, and I'm going to side with your surgeon while also completely understanding the years-of-waiting rage, because I had a version of this conversation myself.

When I was measured for mine, in Thailand, I still had about 4kg to go on a diet I'd been on and off for a year. I asked exactly your question, half hoping to be told it didn't matter. My surgeon's answer was that 4kg on my frame was inside the margin and wouldn't change the plan, and she was right: I lost it that year and the only thing that changed was my bra band. If I'd said 12 or 15kg, she told me plainly, she'd have asked me to come back. The difference between your 6 to 7 and my 4 isn't huge, but you're also mid-diet with momentum, and surgeons have learned the hard way that "another 6" sometimes turns into another 12 once someone's motivated.

Here's why it matters, in the plainest version I can manage. The implant is a fixed volume and it doesn't care what you weigh. Everything else on your chest does. Sizing isn't picking a cc that sounds nice, it's matching the implant's width to the width of your breast footprint and checking how much tissue and skin will cover it. Lose weight after and the cover thins, the footprint can narrow, and an implant that was proportionate becomes a bit more visible at the edges and looks a bit more "done" than you wanted. Gain it back and the reverse. I wrote up the whole thing, including what happened when my own weight swung later on, in the guide to what weight change does to an augmented breast, and it's really the same message as the candidate guide: stable is what they're looking for, not thin.

Practical suggestion: keep the September date if the clinic will hold it, finish the diet by August, and have the sizing appointment then. Most surgeons will do a second measuring session close to the date. You lose nothing except the certainty of a number, and I'd trade that for a size that still fits me in a year.

The cautionary version, since everyone above is being sensible and I wasn't. A friend of mine went ahead mid weight loss, dropped another 9kg after, and by the one year mark the tops of her breasts had that empty look and she could feel the implant edge on the outer side. She's saving for a lift now. Same surgeon offered to wait. She didn't.

Not saying that's you. Just saying the "covering himself" reading is the wrong one.

Update because I hate threads that just stop. Rang the clinic, they've held the September date and booked me a second sizing appointment for late July. I've told myself the target is 5kg not 7 so I'm not still chasing a number the week before. Surgeon's secretary said this is completely standard and about a third of their patients do a two stage sizing for exactly this reason, which made me feel less like a special case.

Also went back and read the bit about how cc and profile are actually matched to your frame and I now understand why he kept saying "we'll see what your width is doing". Thank you all, genuinely.
